Larian confirms you don’t need to play older Divinity games before the new one
Players do not need to play older Divinity games to enjoy the new entry, as previous titles are standalone experiences

Key Points from the Article

  • Older Divinity games matter only for lore and historical context, with callbacks included but no impact on understanding the new story
  • Larian founder Swen Vincke notes earlier games were made by previous iterations of the company, not the current team
Players do not need to play older Divinity games to enjoy the new entry, as previous titles are standalone experiences

Larian Studios says players can jump into the new Divinity game without playing older entries, with past titles mainly recommended for lore fans.

Larian Studios has made it clear that players do not need to have played the older Divinity titles in order to enjoy its upcoming new entry. Larian’s words were in response to queries by some returning players, many of whom had just been introduced to Larian’s RPGs through Baldur’s Gate 3.

Fans interested in playing the older Divinity games will still be able to do so for historical interest, but they will not need it for the new game. The studio confirmed that previous titles were more or less standalone experiences, which set up the world but did not significantly impact the future of that world.

Whereas Baldur’s Gate 3 presented a more recent storyline, the previous Divinity games are generally separate and apart from one another. Vincke added that while Larian is certainly proud of each of them, they were made by previous iterations of the company, and not the one making the new title.

Older games matter for lore reasons

In a recent interview, Larian founder Swen Vincke was asked about the status of older Divinity games in the context of the new project. In response, Vincke added that the older titles, all the way back to Ego Draconis and The Dragon Knight Saga, do have events that matter for history.

However, that is about the extent of it, at least in terms of the current entry. The storylines and characters from earlier entries will not impact the understanding of the new one. Vincke did note that the new game would include callbacks to these earlier titles, but only as a means of providing historical context for the current story.

Who should still play the classic Divinity titles

Vincke suggested that previous Divinity games were best suited for those who enjoyed RPGs in general, and the studio’s titles in particular. As a result, he said that while Baldur’s Gate 3 was more or less self-contained, other players may want to play some of the earlier ones if they were the kind of player who:

  • Liked the heavy narrative approach
  • Preferred cinematic gameplay
  • Enjoyed watching the story unfold

He specifically mentioned that those who were more interested in playing older titles to experience the story would be better suited for Divinity: Original Sin 2.
