Rockstar Games has announced that Grand Theft Auto 6 will release on November 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles, however PC gamers will have to wait yet again.
Despite employing this practice for years now, one former developer has spoken about why games from Rockstar always release on PC later. Former Rockstar Games producer John Ricchio shared his insight during a recent interview.
He stated that Rockstar's decision to delay games on PC comes down to efficiency within development, optimisation and utilizing resources as best as possible, as opposed to favouring consoles.
"We tend to build our games for fixed hardware first - consoles , and then branch out to PC, which has an infinite number of hardware configurations we need to support."
"It’s always better to start with the constraints and then extend. Shrinking is a lot harder than extending. It’s much harder to make your game performant than it is to take advantage of extra hardware power later," Ricchio explained.
He went on to say that Rockstar's decision to delay games on PC isn't because the studio doesn't like PC players. Instead, developers have to ask themselves if the additional development time it takes to work on another platform is worth it from a business standpoint.
"We make trade-off decisions on every project. If I’m spending time making the game work on Xbox, I can’t be doing something else - like creating new content or building a feature."
Ricchio added that even though PS5 and Xbox Series X|S are more closely related to PCs than previous generations of consoles, there's still a lot of work that goes into supporting PC. Grand Theft Auto V released on PC nearly 18 months after its initial launch, and Rockstar's last title to land on PC, Red Dead Redemption 2, launched a little over a year after releasing on consoles.
