A new claim suggests Grand Theft Auto 6 could run at 60 FPS on current-generation consoles. The information comes from Borys Niespielak, speaking on the Polish podcast Rock and Borys (at 30:20), who cites a single but reportedly reliable source from Rockstar Games. According to the claim, the game will feature two graphics modes on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X at launch: a 30 FPS mode and a 60 FPS mode.
The report also touches on the Series S, Microsoft's less powerful console. According to Niespielak, the Series S is currently targeting 30 FPS only, though Rockstar is said to be working closely with Microsoft to try and hit 60 FPS on the weaker hardware too.
Niespielak claims that if the 60 FPS mode isn't ready in time for release, it'll reportedly arrive later via a post-launch updates.
How much should you trust this?
Niespielak has a strong track record. He correctly reported that Ciri would be the main protagonist of The Witcher 4 years before the game was even announced, and he accurately called CD Projekt Red's plans for another Witcher expansion, which materialised as Songs of the Past, before anyone else.
That said, two things warrant caution. The claim rests on a single source, and crucially, Niespielak hasn't previously leaked Rockstar information, so this is new territory for him rather than something that he has proven himself before. His credibility within Polish gaming industry is genuine, but it doesn't automatically transfer to a different publisher, especially one of the size of Rockstar, so it's worth taking all of this with a grain of salt until we get an official information.
60fps mode is a dealbreaker
If accurate, this would be gargantuan. For many players, including yours truly, this is a dealbreaker when it comes to buying GTA 6. The original GTA 5 launched on last-gen hardware capped at 30 FPS, only gaining a 60 FPS performance mode years later with its current-gen re-release. A 60 FPS option available on or near launch for GTA 6 would certainly be a massive step up for Rockstar, and exactly what many players have been hoping for.
It would be quite the achievement too. GTA 6 is an enormous, technically demanding game, perhaps, one of the most complex video games ever made and hitting 60fps on base current-gen consoles while maintaining the visual fidelity Rockstar is known for is a proper challenge.
For now, treat this as an unconfirmed report. The source has earned trust elsewhere, but this is his first foray into Rockstar leaks, and the publisher hasn't detailed GTA 6's performance options, so nothing is settled until it does.
Thanks, Reddit.
