One would think Fortnite's rapid growth stage is over but it seems like Epic's phenomenon isn't yet done growing. In fact, the latest data says that Fortnite is up to 250m players, and there's a new concurrent player record of 10.8 million.
This means that Fortnite got another 50 million players since the end of November, when Epic reported 200 million registered players.
Moreover, the company reported that Marshmello's concert broke the record by hitting 10.7 million concurrent players at the end of February 2019, but this number is already up to 10.8 million, less than a month later.
Speaking to Engadget, Epic's CEO Tim Sweeney said, "It's a shooter. It's worldwide. It's the first shooter with a huge female population. Somebody estimated it at roughly 35 per cent, which is unprecedented -- why isn't it 50? -- but it's unprecedented for anything like this. It's because it brings together players in a social experience."
Fortnite: Battle Royale's path is a pretty interesting one, especially since the game started as an offshoot of Fortnite: Save the World. Epic were riffing on ideas close to PUBG, which was all the rage at the time, and came up with the first, barebones version that many would have trouble recognising today.
Well, at least when it comes to the gaming part, because the game kept the jolly, colourful exterior to this date, with many claiming that this played a huge part in making Fortnite: Battle Royale as popular as it is today.
Unreal Engine 4, the same engine powering Fortnite, has also benefited from the game's success, as the 4.20 version featured a bunch of things that Epic learned deploying Fortnite across the globe. Of course, this is yesterday's news as Unreal Engine enthusiasts have plenty to think about after this year's GDC - yeah, Chaos.
As for Fortnite, Epic will surely hope it can keep growing, not least to help the company with the Epic Games Store and their attempts to wrestle the crown away from Gabe and Co.
