Even though most news coming from Epic Games is either reserved for Fortnite Battle Royale or Save the World, we shouldn't forget that the company has been using both games to perfect and polish that what drives them - the Unreal Engine.

What Epic have basically done is take all the latest tools and optimisations from Fortnite and incorporate them into Unreal Engine 4.20. Indeed, reading through Unreal Engine's 4.20 patch notes, it correlates with Epic's focus in the past months, so we're firstly looking at iOS, Android and Nintendo Switch oriented improvements.

There are in fact more than 100 mobile optimisations, aimed to make cross-platform development and shipping easier. These include Android debugging, mobile landscape improvements and hardware/software occlusion queries and more.

Nintendo's Switch has got a lot of love from Epic and 4.20 adds dynamic resolution and temporal upsampling support, CPU rendering optimisations, threading improvements, texture compression and more.

Epic have also added Proxy LOD (Level of Detail) tool, which seems to be pretty promising, with epic saying it "has graduated from Experimental to production ready!". Note that it's only available in Windows' Unreal Editor at this stage.

New to Unreal Engine is the Niagara Visual Effects Editor, which is available as an early access but is planned to replace Unreal Cascade. There's still a bunch of bug fixing to do but you can see the results on the video below - Niagara is obviously a smash hit.

The dev has continued work on Digital Humans as well, the videos that featured Andy Serkis and Siren, and it's pretty impressive how far along Epic have come in believability. Granted, achieving perfection may never be fully possible when it comes to nature emulation but seeing Epic's work would make anyone question that.

It's pretty interesting though, seeing how Epic manages to marry constructive, which is testing Unreal Engine, with addictive, which is peddling Fortnite to fans all over the globe, combining it all into a huge success story.

To make matters even better, the dev shares the love, having recently increased the cut received by marketplace sellers on Unreal Engine marketplace by 18 per cent.
