Final Fantasy XIV Evercold expansion launches January 2027, featuring new jobs, Evangelion raid, battle system overhaul, and expanded free trial.

Final Fantasy XIV Online will officially be entering its next long-term chapter next year. Square Enix has announced Evercold, the next expansion to the MMO, which is set to release in January 2027.

Introduced by producer and director Naoki Yoshida during the Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival 2026 keynote, Evercold launches players into a completely new story arc known as the Godless Realms Saga.

A cinematic trailer was released alongside the announcement, giving players their first look at what the future holds for the Warrior of Light. Evercold brings with it new major gameplay adjustments, new story content, and the most bizarre crossover yet.

Evangelion Crossover and Massive Gameplay Changes

Players will dive into a brand-new alliance raid series crossover with Neon Genesis Evangelion titled Ghosts of Desire. Developed together with khara, Inc., Ghosts of Desire effectively injects Final Fantasy XIV with elements of the classic anime series, mixing tones and aesthetics from Evangelion into the MMO.

In addition, Evercold will feature two new jobs, a tank and physical ranged DPS, and will raise the level cap from 100 to 110. Players can also expect new cities to explore, brand-new dungeons and trials, as well as an all-new Ultimate raid.

Evercold will also overhaul the existing battle system. The expansion will feature two battle modes: Reborn and Evolved. Reborn will iterate on the existing battle system, while Evolved emphasises each job’s sense of identity, with new jobs only being available in this mode.

Other changes being implemented with Evercold include an overhaul to the Armoury system, additional character customisation options, as well as an entirely new “Seasons” progression system that players will experience going forward.

In other news regarding the free trial, Square Enix announced that Shadowbringers content will soon be available in the free trial as well, massively increasing the breadth of content that newcomers can experience.

With a Nintendo Switch 2 version launching just two months after release in August 2026, Evercold is shaping up to be one of the most exciting updates to Final Fantasy XIV yet.
