In case you haven’t already heard, Elden Ring Nightreign is reportedly getting some big updates from FromSoftware. As the game launched to very positive reactions for its Duos mode and brand new Everdark Sovereigns content, a new datamine has revealed another potential secret weapon that would see the multiplayer expansion get a new ranked mode, potentially giving it a long-term progression and a sense of competitiveness.
It seems that the team is already hard at work behind the scenes on a system called Deep of Night which, as far as a new datamine can tell us, would offer “infinite” difficulty scaling, new SBMM (skill-based matchmaking) options, and a structured ranking system for the newly competitive mode.
Players will earn ranks depending on their in-game performance. As it stands, there is no confirmation from FromSoftware or Elden Ring Nightreign’s developer himself just yet, but the datamine is full of potentially juicy details. If this does end up being the case, it would provide a huge boost in the long term replayability of the new spin-off game from Elden Ring.
Deep of Night Ranked Mode Overview
The leaked Deep of Night mode is said to be found within the Expeditions menu and is detailed as being an “endless ranked” type of game mode. It is claimed that players are unable to choose their targets, but rather are tasked with battling stronger and stronger foes within an environment that becomes increasingly difficult.
On a victorious win, players are said to increase their rating, ascending the mode’s “endless night”.The ranking system is said to be based off of a system called Depth, which is a measurement that would rise on wins, and fall on losses.
The leaked information details the five different Depth Tiers to be:
- Depth 1: Rating 0-999
- Depth 2: Rating 1000-1999
- Depth 3: Rating 2000-3999
- Depth 4: Rating 4000-5999
- Depth 5: Rating 6000 and up
Demotion from higher tiers is said to be disabled after climbing the rank system, making the promotion permanent. Matchmaking is said to be tiered, but if the player base is too small for a certain Depth, it is said that the matchmaking will widen the range.
Skill-Based Matchmaking and Competitive Potential
Deep of Night also appears to feature skill-based matchmaking, which may add ranked or competitive features to Elden Ring Nightreign that have been long desired in Soulslike multiplayer.
With Deep of Night, players would be put into increasingly more challenging tiers against those with a similar Depth rating, likely making for more balanced matches than previously.Keep in mind that all of this information is based on datamined files, which can be changed or scrapped before a game’s launch.
Still, based on what we know of FromSoftware’s plans, Deep of Night offers an intriguing look at what may come for Elden Ring’s multiplayer features. An infinite mode, especially one with permanent progression and tiered ranks, would give PvE-focused players plenty of reasons to return. We’ll have to wait for FromSoftware to make an announcement to see if any of this is true.
