Hotly anticipated action RPG Dragon's Dogma 2 won't have a 60 FPS mode on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles it's been confirmed by Capcom.
The game will instead target 30 FPS with an unlocked frame rate which means features like 120Hz VRR on Xbox Series X|S could come in handy to at least make the 30 FPS look a bit smoother. iDigital Foundry's John Linneman
Digital Foundry's John Linneman suggests that a locked 30 FPS mode should have been included as the current mode will result in poor frame pacing but at least the Xbox version can be saved with a high-refresh-rate feature while the PS5 build will look poor in motion.
"The frame rate is basically 30 fps but with poor frame pacing so it'll look much worse. VRR can save the Xbox version, at least, but PS5 looks poor in motion," he said.
Some previews suggest that the frame rate even dipped below 30 FPS in heavy action-packed sequences, which is far from ideal but hopefully Capcom manage to fix that by the time the game launches later this month.
Capcom's earlier games usually launched with 60 FPS performance mode on consoles but Dragon's Dogma 2 will be the publisher's first true game for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S and it seems that the consoles are not quite capable of delivering higher frame rates while also providing next-gen visuals.
On PC, the game should obviously run much better, especially on high-end hardware. The official system specs mention NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Ti for 4K/30 FPS on the GPU side, which doesn't look that demanding on paper but we shall see once the game releases.
It's certainly a shame that Dragon's Dogma 2 does not have 60 FPS mode on consoles and that the performance seems less than ideal but the previews so far look very good, calling the game another GOTY contender. We sincerely hope that the whole experience is not held back by technical issues.
Dragon's Dogma 2 is hitting the shelves on March 22, 2024, for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. In case you are not familiar with the game, Dragon's Dogma 2 is a large open-world fantasy action RPG where players can recruit several companions and take down large creatures.
The game features various classes and spells, allowing players to customise the playstyle to their liking. It's obviously the second game in the series after Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen from 2012, which earned a cult status over the years.
