Bioware have provided more details on their highly anticipated fantasy RPG Dragon Age: The Veilguard and its companion system, which will be one of the most complex features of the new title.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard, formerly known as Dreadwolf, will feature one of the most complex companion systems Bioware ever created in their games. In a recent interview with GameInformer, Bioware provided a bunch of new details about the companions in Dragon Age Veilguard and everything players can expect when it comes to relationships and how companions will evolve as the story progresses.

X user Shinobi602 made a nice little breakdown of the most important bits and the thing that caught my eye the most is how companions can break the players' hearts and fall in love with other companions.

"What's interesting, you mentioned romance, the companions also develop romantically and I'm not just talking about with the main character Rook; I'm talking about each other. There are moments in the game where two of our companions fell in love with each other and I had to make some pretty challenging choices as it related to the quest we're on," Bioware said.

It's not quite clear how deep this system is and whether it's something that can happen outside of scripted scenarios within the story or side quests. Still, it's something that I've never seen before in an RPG so kudos to Bioware for implementing this feature.

In addition, Bioware said that the game will feature both colourful and optimistic moments but also dark and painful ones. As the game progresses, companions will learn new abilities with the goal of having a synergy in combat that can result in spectacular combos.

On paper, everything  Bioware said so far sounds great but I have to admit that I wasn't really convinced by the recent gameplay showcase and the game's general fantasy aesthetic which looked a bit generic. But that's just me and we've only seen a handful of locations so far so there's a good chance other regions will feature a more distinct and unique design.
