The game tells you to find the probe's serial number. What it doesn't tell you is that the number is split across two different sides of the probe, with one digit left entirely to guesswork.

Directive 8020 is a story-driven horror adventure from Supermassive Games, the studio behind the Until Dawn series. As the game progresses, its puzzles become gradually more demanding, and the code puzzles in particular get harder with each episode.

This one appears during Episode 7, Revelation, where you must find the serial number of a crashed probe out on the planet's surface in order to send a distress signal to Earth. It's a straightforward enough concept, but the way the serial number is split across the probe's body means you can easily miss part of it if you don't explore the wreckage properly.

Step 1: Locate the probe and read the first digit

When the objective to find the probe's serial number appears on screen, approach the probe and look at the panel just to the left of the code input. It displays a partial serial number showing only the first digit: 2. This alone won't get you far, but it confirms you're looking at the right piece of wreckage and sets up what you need to find next. The surrounding environment is dark and the probe itself is half-buried, so take your time rather than rushing straight to the input panel.

The code input panel sits on top of the probe. Check both sides of the wreckage before entering anything here, or you'll be missing part of the sequence.

Step 2: Find the remaining digits on the other side

Don't stop at the code input. Walk around to the opposite side of the probe entirely. There, on the rear panel of the wreckage, you'll find another serial number display showing the last two digits: 4 and 0. So you now have the first digit from one side and the final two from the other. That leaves one digit unaccounted for, sitting in the middle of the sequence between the 2 and the 40. The game offers no further environmental clues for this missing number, which is where the puzzle takes a slightly different turn compared to earlier code challenges in the game.

The rear panel shows the final two digits: 40. Combined with the 2 from the front and the missing middle digit, the full code is 2540.

Step 3: Guess the missing digit and enter the code

With no additional hints available, you're left to work through the possibilities yourself. The missing digit sits between 0 and 9, and the correct answer is 5, making the full serial number 2540. Head back to the code input panel on top of the probe and enter the number. Once you do, the objective completes, a cutscene triggers, and Cernan confirms the signal is ready to send.

Quick tip: If you'd rather skip the trial and error entirely, the correct middle digit is 5. The full code is 2540, and there's no penalty for going straight to the input once you've checked both sides of the probe.
