Supermassive Games has announced a round of anticipated layoffs as part of a company restructuring, with up to 36 employees expected to be affected. The studio described the decision as “very difficult” but necessary in order to adapt to the ever-evolving games industry and realign its internal structure.
The news was shared via an official statement, where the developer acknowledged the challenging environment currently facing the gaming sector. “We know this will be an incredibly difficult time for everyone,” the studio said, adding that its “absolute priority” is to offer full support to those impacted by the consultation process.
As part of the internal reshuffle, Supermassive also confirmed that Directive 8020, one of its upcoming narrative horror projects, will be delayed. Originally expected sooner, the game is now targeting a release in the first half of 2026.
“The response to the game so far has been fantastic, and this additional time will help us deliver the very best experience for our fans,” the statement reads.
Despite the changes, the studio reassured fans that Little Nightmares III, which Supermassive is co-developing with Bandai Namco Europe, remains unaffected by the layoffs or the Directive 8020 delay.
Supermassive Games is best known for its work on cinematic horror titles such as Until Dawn, The Dark Pictures Anthology, and The Quarry. The studio did not provide further details on the impacted departments or whether more layoffs are planned.
