Developer Maverick Games has provided fans with over an hour of gameplay for its upcoming open-world racer Clutch. The livestream provided players with their first comprehensive view of the game’s gameplay outside of its cinematic reveal at Summer Game Fest.
Showing off story missions and races, players are introduced to the core gameplay of Clutch. Hosted by studio founder Mike Brown, players were shown gameplay drawn from the same demo shown to select members of the press during Summer Game Fest.
The livestream dives further into Clutch’s story. Players take control of foster siblings Theo and Cass as they race in the professional R1K Championship circuit and become embroiled with the Midnight Collective, a notorious underground street-racing syndicate.
The early portion of the game is set in London, which joins Monaco and the French Riviera as playable locations. While it is yet to be confirmed if players can explore London in free roam, the city is prominently featured during Clutch’s prologue.
Perhaps the biggest surprise of the gameplay reveals was the inclusion of a Fiat Multipla as one of the playable cars in Clutch. Seen driving the family-intestate early on in the prologue, young Theo and Cass can be seen rushing through London streets as they attempt to evade their social worker. The game skips forward several years to showcase more intense gameplay.
During one section, Theo can be seen street racing and evading police in a BMW M3. Later Cass must escape police in a Jeep after one of her off-road stages. Police chases will be a key element of gameplay as players take to both the streets and off-road environments to evade the authorities. Another exciting gameplay element showcased is the use of grappling hooks to traverse the environment.
Music will also feature throughout Clutch as players drive through the game’s world. Notably Robbie Williams’ Let Me Entertain You is heard playing during the introductory chase sequence. Maverick Games has confirmed that Clutch will support licensed music in addition to an original cinematic orchestral soundtrack.
