CD Projekt Red say The Witcher 4 tech demo was not the actual game
The Witcher 4 "gameplay" was showcased at the State of Unreal event but CD Projekt Red later said that what we've seen is a tech demo set in the Witcher 4 world

Key Points from the Article

  • The Witcher 4 Unreal Engine 5 tech demo showcases impressive technology, but it's important to note that it's not the actual game.
  • CD Projekt Red clarified that the demo is a showcase for the tools and tech they are using to create the world of the Witcher 4, rather than the final product.
  • The demo showcases the powerful foundation and core systems they are developing using Unreal Engine 5.

Gameplay? Nope. It's just a tech demo that shows how The Witcher 4 could look, so keep your expectations in check.

The Witcher 4 Unreal Engine 5 tech demo is one of the most impressive showcases we've seen so far in this gen. CD Projekt Red decided to reveal more of Witcher 4 in a gameplay-style demo, showing us impressive technology that is powering their highly anticipated game.

However, if you're one of those Witcher fans that was drooling over that footage (like yours truly), there's a big disclaimer here that you need to be aware of. That wasn't the actual game.

CD Projekt Red confirmed that in the screenshots they revealed after the showcase - "Technical presentation - Not actual gameplay" and in a direct statement to VGC:

"This is a tech demo, and a first look at the cutting-edge technology powering The Witcher 4 – but not The Witcher 4 itself."

So, what exactly does that mean? Well, CD Projekt Red elaborated that it's the showcase for the tools and tech they are using to create the world of the Witcher 4:

"It showcases the powerful foundation we’re building in close collaboration with Epic Games to push open-world design further than ever before and the core systems and features we’re developing using Unreal Engine 5."

The Witcher 4's world certainly looks impressive, but it may not look like that in the actual game

Does that mean The Witcher 4 won't look as good as the footage from the tech demo? Not necessarily. There's a chance that CD Projekt Red deliver an even prettier game in a couple of years, but we could also get something that doesn't have the same level of detail shown in the demo.

It's hard to say, but given that CD Projekt Red have a history of giving us impressive-looking demos and trailers and then scaling down the visuals in the actual game, I'd say keep your expectations in check.

I'm not saying CD Projekt Red will overpromise and underdeliver again, but until we get some raw gameplay closer to the game's release, it would be smart to remain cautiously optimistic about the visual fidelity of The Witcher 4.
