Finding Ciri in The Witcher 3 was an incredibly long journey but not because of all of the obstacles, and monsters that Geralt had to overcome on his path. Rather, it is due to Gwent being a highly addictive card game, pushing players to beat every known Gwent player and become the Gwent champion of Temeria, leaving the main quest aside for hours.
With The Witcher 4 announcement just behind is, fans of Gwent have been wondering if their favourite card game will be returning in this new adventure that introduces Ciri as the new main protagonist.
The answer is yes. CD Projekt Red have already confirmed in recent interviews that Gwent is coming back and judging by their comments, it could be an improved version with potential new features.
"[Gwent] will be in the game, and we always carefully listen to the community and I don't think anyone will be disappointed," said Executive Producer Gosia Mitręga in an interview with Easy Allies (10:40).
CD Projekt Red people did not reveal additional details about Gwent, which is understandable, we're still ways off from The Witcher 4 but it's certainly nice to have the official confirmation that the card game is back on the menu.
Regarding the improvements we can expect, It's probably safe to say that we'll get new cards, new Gwent-related side quests and potentially new rules or game modes to make the game feel new and fresh.
In case you're not familiar with Gwent, it's a turn-based card game that usually runs from two to three rounds. It was first introduced in The Witcher 3, and quickly became a fan-favourite with many players asking for a standalone Gwent experience.
CD Projekt Red listened so we got a full-fledged release in Gwent: The Witcher Card Game and a new single-player RPG Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales with combat that takes the form of a Gwent match. The devs ended the support for the Gwent: The Witcher Card Game in 2023, probably due to the game's low growth.
