After many patches, updates and the big Phantom Liberty expansion, Cyberpunk 2077 is now finally the game that CD Projekt Red developers aimed to deliver in 2020.
However, CD Projekt Red will no longer work on major content updates. Phantom Liberty is pretty much the first and the last expansion for Cyberpunk 2077.
This wasn't always the plan according to Senior Vice President at CD Projekt Red Michal Nowakowski, who recently revealed that the studio planned to release a total of three expansions. Sadly, two of these were cancelled during development.
Nowakowski revealed (reported via Reddit) that the two planned expansions were cancelled simply for technical reasons but he did not share additional details on what these technical reasons might be.
My guess is simply the scope of work that CD Projekt Red had to do on fixing the game after launch. It's possible that the teams which worked on these expansions had to stop their projects and work on all those quality-of-life features, bug fixes and more.
This statement sparked a discussion among Cyberpunk 2077 fans who point out that there are many empty locations in Cyberpunk 2077 that were probably being saved for a DLC or expansion.
Some of these locations include Arasaka Waterfront and Space Port as well as the Crystal Palace which is mentioned a couple of times in Phantom Liberty.
But unfortunately, we'll never get to see what exactly CD Projekt Red had in store for Cyberpunk 2077 story expansions on top of Phantom Liberty.
