Borderlands 4 appears to represent a significant advancement for the series. Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford announced that their upcoming looter shooter game will boast the studio’s largest seamless universe to date.
Borderlands 4 will launch on September 12, 2025 for PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2 to offer players a vastly more open-world experience than previous games in the series.
At PAX East Pitchford revealed Kairos as the largest game setting Gearbox has ever developed while highlighting the expansive player freedom available.
Exploration will remain fully seamless because there are no loading screens throughout the entire world. Borderlands 4 includes several ambitious new features detailed below.
A Truly Seamless World Without Loading Screens
Gearbox takes world design to new heights with Kairos as the expansive universe in Borderlands 4. Pitchford explained that players can reach any visible location in the game world whether it appears distant or elevated.
If you spot something on the screen either far away or high above you will have access to reach it he explained.
The seamless exploration design in Borderlands 4 represents a major transformation from earlier series entries which featured large environments broken up by loading screens.
The world now operates as one cohesive system which enhances player immersion through its open environment.
No Minimap, But a Smarter Navigation System
The elimination of the classic minimap stands as one of the most unexpected design alterations in Borderlands 4. Gearbox has deployed a fresh compass system to assist players in exploring their vast game world.
Pitchford stated that this change will help players concentrate on the actual gameplay instead of looking at the HUD.
The big map remains accessible with just one click but our goal was to encourage players to explore objectives and opportunities throughout the vast landscape said Pitchford.
Players will have access to an AI-powered GPS system which shows a straightforward route to objectives like real-world navigation systems.
Targeting 60 FPS and Build-Focused Gameplay
Borderlands 4 aims to run at 60 FPS which appears to be the default setting for Performance mode according to Pitchford. Pitchford did not specify whether this performance standard applies to all platforms, but current-gen consoles are anticipated to receive smoother frame rates.
Borderlands 4 will maintain its focus on allowing players to create extreme character builds and chase loot-based power fantasies. Pitchford took to social media to promise fans that Borderlands 4 will prioritize fun as players build powerful characters and defeat bosses using amazing loot.
Creative director Graeme Timmins will manage game balance while only implementing nerfs to address scenarios that are truly game-breaking.
