Borderlands 4 is confirmed to launch on Nintendo Switch 2 not long after launch on other platforms. But in an interview with fans, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford has raised some questions on performance, storage, and more.
In a forum post, Pitchford addressed questions from fans about the upcoming Borderlands 4 performance. Pitchford confirmed that the game will lock to “mostly around 30 FPS” and dip during some of the more graphically intensive moments.
This includes performance hits when playing as host in a multiplayer session, while the game is running in handheld mode. “We decided it was important to us to not cut anything and to support cross-play and the performance of the game is a trade-off for that,” Pitchford added.
Game-Key Card instead of Cartridge?
Pitchford also noted that physical versions of Borderlands 4 on Switch 2 will also still need to be downloaded to play, rather than being directly playable off the system. “It’s a big game. If you own it physically, you still have to download it, because it is a Switch 2 launch game,” Pitchford said.
The implication is that it will most likely launch as a game-key card instead of a cartridge. This is not a new issue on Switch 2, but one that has irked preservationists and collectors that prefer physical media.
Other confirmed features
Despite the performance concerns, Borderlands 4 on Switch 2 still promises several fan-favorite features:
- Four-player local ad-hoc co-op
- Full cross-play with other platforms
- Mouse mode support for enhanced control flexibility
What about Borderlands 3 on Switch 2?
Pitchford noted that there are “major performance issues” with Borderlands 3 on Switch 2 due to the game not being built with that hardware in mind. But it’s noted that to optimize the game, resources will need to be allocated to get that done, and the team’s priority right now is Borderlands 4.
We will have more technical information as it becomes available closer to launch.
