Ubisoft confirmed that Assassin's Creed Shadows' Japan map will be absolutely massive but interestingly, it won't be the series' biggest map.

Modern Assassin's Creed games are known for their sprawling open worlds. From the Odyssey's stunning Greece, all the way to the hillsides of Britain in Valhalla, recent Assassin's Creed games have offered players plenty of locations to explore.

Assassin's Creed Shadows, which is set in Japan, will follow this tradition, offering another big open playground for players. In terms of the exact size, Ubisoft confirmed (via VGC) that Shadows won't have the biggest map in the series. The Japan set title will be more akin to Assassin's Creed Origins' Egypt map, which means Valhalla's map will stay the biggest one in the franchise.

"It’s about roughly similar to Origins, so it’s smaller than Valhalla in terms of territory," said Simon Lemay-Comtois, associate game director at Ubisoft Quebec.

Lemay-Comtois said that players will get to travel a wide variety of environments, from mountain regions to big valleys where most of the interesting stuff is set.

“What we discovered with the team who went scouting in Japan is that most of the interesting stuff is in the valleys,” he said. "There are some cool temples on top of certain mountains, but for the most part it’s almost like a very steep, impregnable bush that there’s no reason to go through".

The maps in recent Assassin's Creed games have always been the highlight of the games and it looks like the upcoming Japan map could be the most gorgeous and diverse one yet.

I have to say that I liked a lot of what Ubisoft has shown so far in terms of environments, especially how the map changes with every new season. This will certainly add a layer of immersion and make the game a joy to explore.

Assassin's Creed Shadows is officially coming on November 15, 2024, to PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
