Star Wars Outlaws is one of the biggest video game releases of this year so it's no wonder that Ubisoft are using every opportunity to show us more of this sci-fi epic, which will allow players to travel across the galaxy, take on various jobs and of course, fight against the Empire and their stormtroopers.
In the latest lengthy gameplay video, developer Massive Entertainment offered almost uninterrupted gameplay that showcased everything from dirty crowded bars and streets, space travel all the way to fighting mobs on sandy planets.
We also got to see a small glimpse of how the skills work in the game and how you activate them. In Star Wars Outlaws you unlock new skills by performing various actions like taking down distracted enemies or defeating a number of enemies with melee weapons. The game has a number of expert NPCs that will give you these tasks to complete.
Another thing that was presented in the showcase was seamless space travel. The player character travelled from a space station to Tatooine without any loading screens which does sound impressive on paper but when you look a bit closer at how this system works you'll notice that this isn't the same freedom that games like No Man's Sky or Star Citizen offer.
You can't land anywhere you want since each planet offers several pre-determined landing locations with points of interest. In addition, the seamless landing looks a bit off and more like a hidden loading screen than an actual cool feature but I guess it's still better than having a traditional loading screen.
Other than that, the game looks fine and quite pretty at some moments with a strong use of ray-traced shadows and lighting, especially indoors.
The combat didn't blow me away but it looks serviceable. I think that Massive will need to nail the exploration and open-world activities if they want this game to succeed given that Star Wars Outlaws offers so many planets to visit.
Some recent previews had a couple of concerning thoughts on the game's gameplay concept, calling it dated and not as engaging as it should be so I'm definitely cautiously optimistic for this one.
