If a recent survey aimed at soliciting responses from the game's core player base is any indication, EA may be close to implementing a monthly subscription option within Apex Legends.
The 23rd season for Apex Legends has engendered concerns about its ability to retain players at the level of its peak year. New seasonal updates with fresh features have not helped in extending in-game popularity beyond revenue goals set by Respawn Entertainment.
The recent survey, as a potential remedy, asked players if they'd be interested in a subscription service with exclusive benefits. Among the rewards reportedly in consideration are special skins, Battle Pass levels, banners, and premium in-game currency enhancements that could add extra value for regular players and amplify their engagement.
That echoes Fortnite's Fortnite Crew, which uses a similar monthly package for $9.99. Fortnite Crew gifts in-game cash, Battle Pass progression, and cosmetics; one of the precedents for such subscription-based services folded into free-to-play games.
With Apex Legends ultimately facing some revenue challenges, it may mean that a subscription now helps EA also pay ongoing server fees and grant more updates and content to the game, possibly supporting future seasons with much greater stability and creativity.
While nothing is confirmed by EA, this survey shows that a shift in monetization is at least seriously considered.
If implemented, the subscription service would reward consistent, unique rewards to hardcore fans as a way to retain them, while positively helping EA bring in more sustainable development to Apex Legends.
