In a surprise move, EA and Respawn Entertainment made the important announcement about the Apex Legends. That means Apex Legends will no longer support Linux.
By that fact, it could also be interpreted as no more support for Valve's Steam Deck because it operates on a Linux OS. The reason is apparently to prune their efforts generally in trying to limit the increasingly dire cheatings happening in this free-to-play battle royale game.
EA explained that Linux has, unfortunately, become a viable path for cheat developers to exploit the open-source operating system to the detriment of Apex Legends.
For this reason, the developers have decided to block access completely for Linux. As EA explained, few players game on Linux; be that as it may, the difficulty in finding and stopping these cheats has increased, considering that some of these Windows-based cheats are emulated onto Linux, making anti-cheat measures even more complicated.
"In our continued effort to detect and prevent cheat mechanisms, Linux operating systems were pinpointed as a vulnerability that impactful cheats and exploits were entering the game through," EA explained. "While only an extremely small portion of our player base plays using Linux, we do believe this step is an important one to help increase security for our average player.
Although this change happens to affect Steam Deck clients, too, EA made clear that Apex Legends can continue to be played on the handheld device, so long as players install Windows on their Steam Decks. However, those playing using the default Linux-based SteamOS are no longer able to do so.
This is a decision not taken very well within the Linux community, but in continuing to make sure efforts are made to keep the integrity of the game, the resources are better utilized on a much larger player base.
Apex Legends is still available for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
