Alan Wake 2 is shaping up to be one of the most visually impressive titles of this gen thanks to its incredible art style and level of detail.
So far, we got to see some in-game footage, showcasing the incredible visuals that should push the current-gen consoles to their limit. Since Remedy are focusing strongly on the visuals and ambience, one would think that only 30 FPS mode is almost a lock but luckily, Alan Wake 2 will launch with Performance Mode too.
This was confirmed today by Remedy Entertainment's Communications Director Thomas Puha on social media platform X. Puha revealed that even though Alan Wake 2 was built from the beginning as a 30 FPS experience, the development team managed to include a Performance Mode on Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5.
"I'm glad to say that Alan Wake 2 will have a Performance mode on PS5 and Xbox Series X," Puha stated in the post. The game has been built from the beginning as a 30fps experience focusing on visuals and ambiance, but somehow we have managed to include a solid Performance mode."
Puha added that Remedy's in-house engine Northlight scales really well, allowing the devs to lower the resolution but retain the visual quality of the game.
Interestingly, he also states that one of the biggest development challenges from a performance standpoint was the game's Pacific Northwest region, which has a lot of foliage, trees and expensive lighting that makes the game look incredible but can be taxing on the frame rate.
All in all, it's a great tiny insight into the development of Alan Wake 2 and the area of focus for the dev team. Hopefully we'll hear more about Alan Wake 2's Performance Mode on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S in the coming weeks.
Alan Wake 2 is launching on PC, Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 on October 27, 2023.
