Alan Wake 2 is Remedy Entertainment's fastest selling game ever, the developer announced today in their earnings report. This psychological horror and our personal game of the year has sold a total of 1.3 million copies accross all platforms.
While Remedy say Alan Wake 2 sold over 50 per cent more copies and over three times more digital copies in its first two months than Control did in its first four, the total number of sales is still quite low by the industry standards for AAA games of that scope.
For comparison sake, Capcom's Resident Evil 4 sold over 5 million copies in its four months, which is a milestone that Alan Wake 2 won't be able to beat.
So why isn't Alan Wake 2 selling more copies? Well, theare are a couple of reasons and one of them is the lack of physical release. Another one is the lack of release on Steam, the most popular storefront on PC.
At the moment, Alan Wake 2 is exclusive to Epic Games Store on PC and it's safe to assume that many PC players will be waiting for Steam launch before buying this one.
Another thing to consider is the fact that Remedy's games traditionally don't sell extremely well. Control sold 4 million copies but it it needed Switch and next-gen re-release to reach that number. The key part to understand is that Remedy's titles usually don't have large budgets so it's easier for the studio to make profit even with lower sales.
Additionally, Remedy Entertainment said they are now increasing the production of their other upcoming games like Control 2, May Payne 1 and 2 remakes and Condor since the Alan Wake 2 development team joined these projects recently.
They expect these games to enter the next phase of development in the first half of 2024. This probably refers to full production stage but some of these titles are still years away, namely Max Payne remakes, which just recently were in concept phase.
It will be interesting to see the total number of sales for Alan Wake 2 once the game launches on Steam and goes on sale. We would certainly recommend this blockbuster to everyone who loves great storytelling and fantastic horror atmosphere.
