Another video game is set to receive a film adaptation, with Ubisoft's popular Watch Dogs franchise being the latest in line. The series, which has seen three separate sequels released, is rumored to be making its move to the big screen.
Deadline reported this news today, and it carries particular significance as there are discussions about Sophie Wilde, renowned for her role in the immensely popular horror film Talk To Me, potentially taking on a significant role. Given her widespread popularity, it's anticipated that she might be considered for one of the main roles.
Certainly, fans of the Watch Dogs series are well aware that the lead roles in the first two installments were portrayed by male characters. Notably, Watch Dogs: Legion broke the tradition by allowing players to choose their main character, eliminating a predefined protagonist. Consequently, it adds an intriguing element to anticipate how the Watch Dogs movie will shape its format and narrative.
Renowned French genre director Mathieu Turi is helming the film, with an original screenplay penned by Christie LeBlanc. LeBlanc is recognized for her work on the Netflix original sci-fi thriller Oxygen, which was based on the 2016 Black List script O2. The screenplay has undergone revisions by Victoria Bata.
Watch Dogs made its debut in 2014 with the initial installment, featuring sandbox gameplay centered around hacking the recently implemented ctOS system in the technologically advanced city of Chicago. The storyline in the first Watch Dogs was notably somber and, some might say, somewhat melancholic.
In Watch Dogs 2, a somewhat brighter tone was introduced, marked by vibrant colors and a more engaging protagonist. Set in San Francisco, the narrative continued to revolve around the nefarious corporation Bloom as the primary adversary. The third installment, set in London, is often regarded as the weakest entry in the series.
As the casting is still in the process of being finalized, the film is unlikely to be released anytime soon. It remains intriguing to anticipate the narrative direction, considering the significant potential embedded in the Watch Dogs series. With all the elements falling into place, there's the potential for a highly successful adaptation.
