Genma Notes are the odd one out among Onimusha: Way of the Sword's collectibles, since the game never marks them on your map. There are 23 in total, hidden inside chests that only reveal themselves through Oni Vision, and while that sounds like a lot of blind searching, most of them turn up naturally if you know the pattern behind where they're placed. A handful, including the final boss's note, need a specific extra step to track down.
How Oni Vision reveals hidden Genma chests
Hold L2 and R2 together to activate Oni Vision, which scans the surrounding area. When there's a Genma Note nearby, this reveals an Oni medallion floating in the world. Interact with it, and it breaks apart to expose a hidden chest, which you can then examine to claim the note inside. Your gauntlet also blinks on its own once you're close enough to a hidden chest, so you don't always need to activate Oni Vision manually to know one's nearby.
Where to find notes for regular Genma
Every time you encounter a new type of Genma for the first time, stick around the area for a short while after the fight. The gauntlet will pick up on the nearby Oni medallion and reveal that Genma's note without you needing to search anywhere else. Handled this way, the regular notes are difficult to miss simply by playing through the game at a normal pace.
If you, by any chance, miss some of them, try to remember where you fought a certain enemy for the first time. The first couple of Genma are located inside Eastern Kyoto, and the rest are inside the side areas. Again, it is almost impossible to miss any of them if you're thorough in your exploration.
Where to find notes for boss Genma
Every boss you defeat also has a Genma Note tied to it, with one exception covered below. To find these, return to the boss's arena after the fight is over. A hidden chest containing that boss's note will be waiting somewhere in the same space where you fought them.
How to get the final boss's Genma Note
The final boss doesn't drop its note in the arena like the others. Once you've beaten it, don't start a new game, whether from a complete save or otherwise. Instead, load back into your existing save, and you'll spawn just before the point of no return, inside the Rokudo-chinnoji temple. Once here, check the back room to the right, where the final Genma Note is waiting.
Quick tip: Run Oni Vision before you leave any boss arena for good, rather than trying to remember to backtrack later. It only takes a second, and it's the easiest way to avoid having to retrace your steps across the whole map once you realise you're missing one. However, you'll have to reset the world inside a Spirit Mirror for it to work.
