Red Threads are invisible barricades scattered through Onimusha: Way of the Sword, blocking doors and passages until you deal with whatever's generating them. The game explains the basics early on, but the process is easy to fumble if you're not paying attention. Clearing one means tracking down a hidden spider at the far end of its thread and destroying it, and with two or three threads per barrier, it's easy to lose one halfway through.
How to spot Red Threads
You won't see a Red Thread barrier under normal vision. The first sign is your gauntlet flickering as you approach one. Trigger Oni Vision with L2 and R2 together, and the barrier becomes visible: a thick red mass with individual threads trailing off in different directions. Early on you'll usually deal with two threads per barrier, but later encounters often bump that up to three.
How to trace a thread to its source
Follow each thread away from the barrier to find where it ends. At the far end is a spider generating that thread, though like the barrier itself, it won't be visible under normal vision. Getting close makes your gauntlet flicker again, and triggering Oni Vision reveals the spider so you can deal with it.
How to destroy the spiders
The spiders themselves are harmless and won't attack you, so there's no danger in approaching one. Use your sword if it's within reach, or switch to the bow if it's perched somewhere you can't easily get to. The one thing to watch for is that revealed spiders don't stay visible indefinitely. If one fades from view before you've hit it, just trigger Oni Vision again and finish it off quickly. Clear every thread feeding into a barrier, and the whole obstacle breaks apart.
Quick tip: If you can see a thread leading up onto a roof or somewhere else out of sword range, switch to the bow before you bother triggering Oni Vision. Spiders don't stay revealed for long, and fumbling a weapon swap after the fact is the easiest way to lose one and have to start the reveal over again.
