Charms in Onimusha: Way of the Sword are equippable items that give Musashi passive buffs, things like extra damage, more health, or stronger special abilities. There are 20 in total, and while none of them are missable if you're clearing the game's main and side content, fully upgrading all of them is a genuinely tedious grind tied to two separate trophies.
What charms do
Each charm grants a specific passive bonus, whether that's boosted damage after a parry, more health, or improved efficiency on one of your special powers. Every charm has three upgrade levels, and each one needs to be fully maxed to count towards the "Charmed Life" trophy for upgrading every charm in the game. There's a separate trophy, "A Real Charmer", for maxing out just one.
Where to upgrade charms
All charm upgrades happen at Enma's Hall, inside Rokudo-chinnoji Temple. This shop unlocks naturally after the tutorial, and the game makes sure you interact with it at least once, so you won't miss its existence even if you're not paying close attention.
How to unlock all 20 charms
Every charm in the game is tied to a main or side quest, which means working through everything the game offers will unlock all 20 without any extra effort. There's no need to hunt for hidden charms scattered around the world; just play through the content and they'll come to you.
What you need to upgrade them
Upgrading a charm costs two resources: red souls, earned by killing Genma, and Offerings, which you'll find scattered through the world or can buy from Yorimasa's Monument. That shop's stock is limited and can run out, so don't assume you can always buy your way to the Offerings you're missing. Fully upgrading all 20 charms takes a genuinely large amount of both resources, and the grind is the main obstacle here rather than any tricky mechanic. If you're not finished by the time you roll credits, the good news is charms carry over into New Game Plus, so the progress isn't lost.
Quick tip: Keep an eye on Yorimasa's Monument's stock because at several points through the game it will get restocked with new items. If something you're after is sold out, it's worth checking out for a red dot on the shop's icon, which means new items are available there.
