The first puzzle in Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss looks like a simple document arrangement. It is not. Here is every step, in the right order, so you do not spend an hour staring at a wall.

The portal puzzle in Mei's house is the opening challenge in Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss, the latest horror adventure from Nacon, and it is more involved than it initially appears. What starts as a scavenger hunt for scattered documents turns into a sonar tutorial, a crystal hunt, and finally a trip to the basement. Each step unlocks the next, and missing the order makes the whole thing considerably more confusing than it needs to be.

Step 1: Collect the documents

Five documents are scattered around Mei's house. They are not hidden, and all are visible without searching too hard. The important thing here is to collect only four of them first. Your inventory holds a maximum of four documents at once, so leave the fifth, the one sitting directly in front of the ritual wall, where it is for now. You will need to pick it up last.

Step 2: Arrange the documents on the ritual wall

Stand in front of the ritual wall and pull out your documents one at a time. Each document has a small curved section along its edge that corresponds to part of the outer ring on the wall. Use these curved edges as your guide to match each document to its correct position. Once all four are placed, retrieve the fifth from the desk in front of the wall and mount it in the remaining slot. When arranged correctly, the completed wall will reveal the outlines of two objects you need to find.

Step 3: Learn the sonar

With the documents arranged, go to the desk in the room directly opposite the ritual wall and inspect the crystal-like rock sitting on it. This triggers the game's sonar tutorial. Follow the prompts as they appear. If you miss any part of the tutorial, press L2 to open the sonar interface manually, then press X to add the crystal you just found. Exit the interface, then press, hold, and release R2 to activate the sonar pulse. All objects sharing the same frequency as the crystal will become visible in the environment, highlighted on screen.

Step 4: Find the two stones

The sonar will reveal the locations of many similar stones; however, only two of them are needed for this puzzle. Scan the area and look for the two stones corresponding to the shapes shown on the ritual wall. One is tucked behind the pillow on the bed beside the ritual wall. The other is inside the bedroom, on a shelf. If you are struggling to locate either of them, activate the sonar again and scan the surrounding area slowly. Both stones will appear highlighted once the pulse reaches them.

Step 5: Place the stones in the basement

With both stones collected, head down to the basement. Find the wall covered in a strange dark substance and locate the two sockets set into it. Place each stone in its corresponding socket. A cutscene will trigger, and the portal puzzle is complete.

Quick tip: If the sonar does not seem to be picking anything up, make sure the crystal from the desk is loaded into the sonar interface first. The pulse only reveals objects sharing that specific frequency, so nothing will appear until the correct crystal is active.
