As one would expect, Digital Extremes' announcement of Warframe coming to Nintendo's Switch didn't take long to turn into a barrage of cross-play related questions and although the developer is exploring the possibility, nothing is final.
Warframe was announced for Switch on this years TennoCon, the place to be for all things Warframe. I suspect some Warframe players already have a Switch but knowing the game's fanatical following, many will probably buy it specifically for Warframe, which makes the issue of cross-play all the more important.
Digital Extremes studio manager Sheldon Carter said that the dev is currently "exploring all options for people to play on and with" Nintendo's little guy, but refused to be drawn into guarantees or promises.
Of course, promising anything cross-play related would just be foolish at the moment, for a variety of reasons, chief of which being that Warframe still has a way to go until it launches on the Switch to begin with. I mean, even the trailer, as interesting as it is, doesn't really tease much, again hinting Warframe's some way off the launch.
Another tiny detail is the Nintendo-Sony war that stretches back before Tolkien's elves and dwarves got their mithril panties up in a bunch. After all, Epic didn't manage to change mighty Sony's mind, despite commanding just about infinite resources themselves, how could Digital Extremes even begin to scratch the surface.
Interestingly, even if cross-play doesn't go through in the end, Digital Extremes does seem to have a solution that Epic couldn't offer in Fortnite, which is one time migration of your account. If you choose to, you can migrate your Warframe warframes and the remainder of your Tennocious D stuff to another platform.
I've found this quite peculiar considering Epic said that there was nothing they could do in case of Fortnite's . I fail to see how Epic couldn't have come to a similar deal with Nintendo's and Sony's head honchos, leaving us to wonder what sort of magic do Digital Extremes command. Ah, must be that Rhino Build of Gentle Persuasion.
