Ubisoft has been celebrating the launch of Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced in a fittingly theatrical way. The official Assassin’s Creed social media accounts shared a series of photos today of a massive sand sculpture created on the shores of the Mexican Caribbean, commissioned as part of the game’s marketing campaign. The piece was carved by artist José Sese, known on social media as @jossesandarte, and blends the iconic Black Flag logo with the design language of the Aztec Sun Stone.
The finished sculpture is a large circular relief featuring the Black Flag skull-and-crossed-swords Assassin emblem at its centre, surrounded by detailed carvings in the Mesoamerican style. The outer ring carries the Assassin’s Creed creed in Spanish: “Nada es verdad, todo está permitido” — nothing is true; everything is permitted — while a galleon and other nautical motifs are carved into the upper sections, nodding to the game’s Caribbean pirate setting. The photographs show Sese working on the piece in the heat of the day, carving out letters, figures, and fine decorative details by hand. Actors in period-accurate Mayan costume and full Edward Kenway cosplay also appear alongside the completed sculpture in the shots shared by Ubisoft.
It is a smart piece of location marketing that leans into the game’s Caribbean DNA rather than a generic promotional campaign, and the craftsmanship on display is remarkable given the medium. Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced has been out since 9 July on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, and has moved over three million copies in its first ten days on sale, according to Ubisoft’s own figures.
