Starfield's first expansion is not getting great reviews, unfortunately. Bethesda's dive into House Va'ruun lore and the mysteries surrounding the worshippers of the Great Serpent sounded intriguing on paper and what we've seen from the trailers also gave us some hope that Shattered Space could signal a big comeback for the sci-fi RPG but according to the reviewers, it's simply not good enough.
At the time of writing this article, Starfield is one of the lowest-rated video game releases of 2024. On Metacritic, Starfield has an overall score of 54 out of 100, while on OpenCritic, the metascore is 55 out of 100 with only 29 per cent of reviewers recommending the expansion.
This puts Starfield at the very bottom of the list of all video games released in 2024 with commercial and critical flops like Foamstars, Silent Hill: The Short Message, Skull and Bones and Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. It's not quite the company you want to hang out with.
Many reviewers seem to agree that the $30 price tag is way too much for what you get with Shattered Space, which is a ten-hour story, with new side quests, and very little new content in terms of weapons, and unique points of interest.
In addition, many reviews point out poor performance and technical issues on the Xbox Series X console, with drops to 30 FPS even in performance mode, which should be locked to 60 FPS.
But perhaps the biggest issue with the Shattered Space for many seems to be that the expansion doesn't improve on the base game in any way, as the majority of reviewers point out. Basically, if you don't like Starfield, you won't like Shattered Space either.
It's certainly a shame since Bethesda probably counted on Shattered Space to bring back a lot of players who stopped playing Starfield at one point after launch.
Starfield will still get new expansions as Bethesda revealed earlier that they aim to have one new expansion every year.
