Squadron 42, which was announced eight years ago, has experienced significant scope expansion and includes an all-star cast, bleeding edge tech, and hundreds of new features.

At CitizenCon, the most recent event, Cloud Imperium Games has reassured fans that Squadron 42, a single-player game set in the Star Citizen universe - is still on track for release before 2026.

While many of us might be struggling to plan the meals for the upcoming week, Chris Roberts and his team at Cloud Imperium Games have something a little bigger planned: releasing the highly-anticipated Squadron 42.

The blockbusting space game, set in the larger Star Citizen universe, promises an immersive single-player experience.

Some of you may recall that Roberts pronounced the game "all but done" as far back as eight years ago. In the years since, the scope of the project has blown out spectacularly to include an all-star cast, bleeding edge tech and hundreds of new features that have continually pushed its release date further and further back.

But however long the wait has been, with ongoing active development, Squadron 42 still remains one of the most ambitious PC games in development by anyone today.

In fact, the technical complexity of the game is already so high that current hardware chokes on it, which was also readily apparent from a number of crashes throughout the demo at CitizenCon in Manchester last weekend.

However, attendees did get to see over an hour of footage from the actual gameplay, showing off just a tiny fraction of the 30-40 hours of content planned for the complete game.

But if that were not enough, Squadron 42 also boasts an all-star cast, including Mark Hamill, Henry Cavill, Gary Oldman, Andy Serkis, and Gillian Anderson.

Independent game developers took it a step further and confirmed the fact that, though the project was considered feature-complete last year, it's still a long way from release, with a now-confirmed launch date of 2026.

Instead, a slew of gameplay footage, along with some exciting announcements about it from CitizenCon, has given fans plenty to look forward to.
