Players have been getting disgruntled with Sea of Thieves recently, due to the lack of end game content and general repetitiveness. Rare's executive producer, Joe Neate, came out with a response today regarding the game's future content.
Neate started his statement out by saying Rare have been listening to the players' feedback and crafted a short term roadmap accordingly. Their focus list apparently starts with "encouraging different types of player encounters". It continues with two lines of saying "adding more content" in two different ways and giving players different goals and rewards.
Reward system is definitely one aspect of the game that needs a lot of work, and it feels good to see Rare acknowledging the players' frustration with it. Considering they mentioned this in the same line as "giving players new goals" hints at a planned achievement and reward interaction. This wasn't officially confirmed by Neate, but a high possibility based on Rare's stated goals.

There is also a mention of Rare wanting to "broaden the journey to Pirate Legend and beyond" which will likely include alterations on gaining the title as well as adding more titles beyond. This is probably a direct response to the way Prod1gyX his max reputation with the three merchant guilds.
Neate stated once again that Rare's focus in April will be to continue addressing the top feedback points but their focus will shift towards adding new content in May. At this point it started looking like he's talking in circles. Maybe he had a word count goal to reach.

Either way, Neate continues describing the game's first content update which will be named The Hungering Deep. It will come in May and "bring with it a new AI threat to the world". He states that crews will have to work together in order to discover and defeat this threat "as part of a unique event".
Let's hope that doesn't mean the kraken rewards will be just a time limited event. He doesn't explicitly say it will be a kraken, but considering the update's name it's hard to imagine anything else that would want to bring down ships and require more than one to defeat it.

There will be new mechanics introduced "to assist the players with this event" and it will yield unique rewards. Weekly events will also start popping up during May. Another two content updates are planned during the summer, named Cursed Sails and Forsaken Shores. The first one sounds a lot like duking it out with a ghost ship and Neate saying new AI threats will emerge almost confirms it.
Good news for everyone is that all these content updates , so no additional fees will incur.
