IO Interactive has revealed more information on how 007 First Light will support the PlayStation 5 Pro. The developer confirmed that the new James Bond action-adventure will arrive with its upgraded PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) feature enabled by default on Sony’s new console at launch.
In a blog post on the technology, IO Interactive says that the upgraded version of PSSR provides a visibly cleaner and more stable image quality compared to older upscaling technologies.
Coupled with dense level environments, Bond movie-style cinematics, and plenty of frantic movement, IO Interactive explains that PSSR drastically improves image clarity while playing.
One major area of improvement that the developer calls out is shimmering, flickering and graphical noise. These graphical artifacts are common in areas with busy foliage, thin geometry or intensive motion, but the upgraded version of PSSR appears to handle them much better.
IO Interactive also noted better temporal stability when navigating the game world. When moving around quickly, whether Bond is darting between cover or while the camera is whipping around during a skirmish, upgraded PSSR should keep the image looking crisp without objects deteriorating during movement.
While these upgrades will likely apply across the board, IO Interactive predicts they will be much more noticeable during close-ups and beautifully-detailed outdoor areas where lighting, vegetation and geometric detail will tax upscaling technologies the most.
Upgraded PSSR support will be enabled by default on PS5 Pro at launch. For other platforms, IO Interactive will be using AMD’s FSR 3.1.5 upscaling tech, but says this remains the studio’s choice for those not playing on a PS5 Pro.
007 First Light launches on May 27 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. The Nintendo Switch 2 version is coming later this summer.
