Warhorse Studios, the developer behind Kingdom Come: Deliverance, has officially confirmed it is working on an open-world RPG set in Middle-earth, ending months of rumour.

The rumours were true after all. Warhorse Studios has officially confirmed that an open-world Middle-earth RPG is currently in development at the studio. The announcement came via the studio's official X account this morning, with no further details beyond the confirmation itself.

While rumours of a Warhorse-developed Lord of the Rings game had been circulating for months, this marks the first official confirmation directly from the studio. No release window, gameplay footage, or story details were shared alongside the announcement, which suggest we will be waiting for a couple of more years for this one.

If you need convincing that Warhorse is a reasonable fit for something this ambitious, Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 should do the job. The studio has built a reputation for grounded, immersive open-world RPGs with a genuine attention to world detail and that sensibility maps reasonably well onto Tolkien's lore, which rewards exactly that kind of approach. I don't know about you, but this is now one of my most anticipated upcoming games.
