In what can only be described as a serious own goal, Capcom has managed to make Resident Evil 4 Remake run worse on PC by removing Denuvo. The catch? They replaced it with Enigma DRM, a protection system that's causing serious performance drops across the board.
Players who bought the game legitimately are reporting FPS decreases ranging from 10% to over 50%, depending on their setup. GPU utilisation has dropped, stutters have increased, load times are a bit longer, and Steam Deck performance has taken a severe hit. But that's not even the worst part.
Enigma was cracked within hours, so people who got the game illegally are getting a better experience than paying customers. It's certainly not the best look for the Japanese publisher, to say the least.
Steam users are leaving negative reviews
As expected, players on Steam didn't take this update kindly and have started to change their reviews to negative. One player running an RTX 5070 with an Intel Core Ultra 7 265KF reports dropping from 220+ fps at 1440p to barely managing 120fps after the update.
Another can't maintain 60fps in the village area, where they previously had no issues. The frustration is palpable across the reviews. "Recent update added Enigma DRM making performance so much worse," reads one.
"This game is already demanding enough as it is, great job f****** over your paying customers capcom," adds another.
What makes this particularly galling is that Denuvo wasn't causing noticeable performance problems. Multiple users explicitly state that the previous DRM implementation ran fine.
One review puts it plainly: "I don't have a problem with drm if it is implemented properly and doesn't cause performance issues (Denuvo didn't have any performance issues or crashes), but this enigma has performance issues. REMOVE IT!!!!"
Usually, the difference on PC is some scenes is negligible...
But then, the Enigma version has large FPS drops that lead to this...
Some Mods Also Broken
The update also broke REFramework mod support, adding insult to injury for the modding community. So not only are legitimate players getting worse performance, but they're also losing access to community-created content that enhanced their experience. It's hard to understand the logic here.
Capcom removed one DRM solution that worked reasonably well, replaced it with another that demonstrably harms the experience, and achieved absolutely nothing in terms of actual protection. If you're a PC player who bought Resident Evil 4 Remake and is affected by this update, you certainly have every right to be furious.
But let's hope Capcom resolves this problem with further updates. I have contacted the publisher to ask if they are aware of the issues and whether they plan to release a fix. We will update this article with their response if/when they get back to us.
In other news, Capcom's Resident Evil team is currently preparing to launch one of the biggest titles of 2026 in Resident Evil Requiem, which looked incredible in the footage we've got to see so far. Let's just hope it runs as beautifully on PC when it launches!
