Team17 has signed a worldwide publishing agreement with Polish developer Sonka for Holstin, a psychological survival horror game announced in early 2023. According to the press release, the partnership aims to expand momentum built through the studio's concept-proving demos and distinctive visual style.
Holstin takes place in Jeziorne-Kolonia, a deteriorating Polish town consumed by mysterious slime and inhabited by possessed locals slowly losing sanity. Players investigate the ominous presence whilst scavenging supplies, fighting twisted monstrosities, and interrogating increasingly unhinged residents to uncover answers.
Unique 2D, 3D and Isometric camera combination
The game employs Sonka's custom 2XD Rendering technology, combining real-time lighting with hand-drawn pixel art across multiple camera perspectives - isometric 3D, third-person shooting, first-person driving, top-down exploration, and side-scrolling platforming. It's certainly one of the most unique video games you'll see, but whether these perspective shifts enhance immersion or feel disjointed, it remains to be seen.
Resident Evil meets Twin Peaks
It's clearly evident that the dev team was inspired by classic Resident Evil and Silent Hill whilst targeting Twin Peaks' darker narrative tone. The game will also feature full voice acting in Polish and English.
"We are proud to partner with such a talented team, that have created a game that embodies unique atmospheric storytelling, with innovative gameplay mechanics," said Harley Homewood, General Manager at Team17.
Holstin launches on PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Switch with no confirmed release window. Team17 promises additional reveals in the coming months.
