Crimson Desert have managed to sell over 3 million copies across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and PC since it launched last week on March 19. For a game that didn't have as high review scores as Pearl Abyss would've hoped, that's a pretty substantial number that will almost certainly make the publisher happy (for now).
Crimson Desert launched to a 78 on Metacritic, well below the mid-to-high 80s many had anticipated after seven years of development, and faced additional scrutiny following the discovery of AI-generated assets that slipped into the final release. None of that appears to have had much impact on sales.
The studio acknowledged player feedback in their announcement, stating they will continue working to improve the experience. That lines up with what most expected post-launch: Pearl Abyss have a lot of patching and polish work still ahead of them, and the sales figure gives them a solid foundation to build on.
While I'm still looking to get the most out of Crimson Desert after 10 hours of gameplay, it's would be unfair to say that Pearl Abyss didn't create one of the most stunning open worlds to date, packed with ambitious gameplay mechanics.
In the end, three million in under a week is a great result by any measure. Whether the game legs it out over the coming months will depend on how quickly and effectively Pearl Abyss address the issues players have flagged but so far, it's looking really good for the Korean publisher.
