During the lead-up to Season 5, Blizzard devs teased a new single-player mode for Overwatch 2: Invasion, later named Hero Mastery. It aimed to train players on hero mechanics and teamwork through hero-specific courses and co-op modes.
Hero Mastery launched alongside Overwatch 2: Invasion in Season 6, dropping on August 10, 2023.
When is Overwatch 2 Hero Mastery being released?
Additional missions were introduced in Season 8's mid-season patch on January 2, 2024, and Hero Mastery: Gauntlet arrived in Season 9 on March 12, 2024.
The plan was to gradually release more missions for different heroes over subsequent seasons. The available missions and their release seasons are as follows:
- Reinhardt, Winston, Sojourn, Tracer, and Mercy: Season 6
- D.Va, Mei, Echo, Genji, and Lucio: Season 8
Hero Mastery: Gauntlet was released in Season 9. However, as it is not a new mission, it was part of the mode and ceased operation by the end of Season 10.
Overwatch 2 Hero Mastery Challenges
During the Invasion reveal stream, we got a glimpse of what the Hero Mastery mission challenges entail. Each Hero's map features scattered coins that players must collect while practicing movement mechanics.
The goal is to gather as many coins as possible to increase your Mastery score. Much like how LEGO games utilize studs, players will need to employ mechanical tricks to reach the more challenging coins.
Score and competition:
- Scores are tallied at the end of each run.
- Mastery score and time displayed.
- Mode is ideal for speedrunners aiming for the fastest times.
Overwatch 2 Hero Mastery Challenges
Hero Mastery Gauntlet is a spin-off of the Hero Mastery mode introduced in the mid-season update of Season 9. It will be removed at the start of Season 11 due to a lackluster reception from the community.
Gameplay:
- Co-op game mode, where players protect towers from enemy bots.
- It functions as a tower defense mode within Hero Mastery.
- Players must defend towers and collect coins to earn high scores.
- Compete on leaderboards.
One of Hero Mastery's goals is to help newer players determine if a hero's mechanics suit them or to practice the fundamentals of a specific hero. It covers a range of advanced mechanics for players to learn.
