You won't be able to do a pacifist run in Obsidian's RPG Avowed, the developers confirm in the recent interview.

We've seen plenty of new footage from Avowed and got some additional details about the game from Obsidian Entertainment, specifically Game Director Carrie Patel and Gameplay Director Gabe Paramo.

In their recent interview with PC Gamer, Patel and Paramo talked more about Avowed's companions, combat and other gameplay mechanics. When asked if players would be able to complete the game without killing a living soul, Patel replied that while there will be many ways to use dialogue and stealth to avoid combat, Avowed is combat-focused and will require killing humans, lizards and other races that reside in The Living Lands.

"Players can expect to see solutions and opportunities to use dialogue, maybe take advantage of reactivity with regards to characters they might have helped or met earlier in," Patel said and added that there will be "some stealth solutions," but "focus on combat" is what players should expect from Avowed.

This probably won't come as a surprise to those who are excited for Avowed given that Obsidian spent a lot of time talking about the combat in the recent Developer Direct and Xbox podcast.

I can't say that this is disappointing either as there's rarely an RPG game on the market that does this well. I'd even argue that sometimes, talking your way out of specific scenarios can be immersion-breaking as somehow, I fail to believe that a couple of nice words will change the mind of an assassin whose one job was to murder my character.

Anyway, it's nice that players will still have plenty of options to avoid getting their swords soaked with blood, be it stealth or sweet-talking.

Avowed is certainly shaping up to be one of my most anticipated titles of 2024 and all these little bits of information that Obsidian have been dropping lately only make me even more excited to finally play this fantasy RPG later this year.

Avowed is launching on PC and Xbox Series X|S in Autumn 2024.
