Valve released the two Left 4 Dead games in quick succession but then pretty much left them and now the sequel suddenly received a massive update, free weekend and a discount.

Left 4 Dead 2: The Last Stand update has just launched and Valve are celebrating the occasion with a free weekend as well as an 80 per cent discount. This brings the already low price down to spare change but if you are still not convinced you can check the game out for free until the end of the weekend.

The update itself brought a new spin to the original Survival map which is no longer impossible to escape. However, the challenge will still remain much harder, compared to the regular campaign, as the four survivors attempt to find their way to salvation through the undead-infested lighthouse. There is a total of 26 maps where the players can try their survival skills out against hordes of zombies.

You can preview some of the new melee weapons in the trailer below, which also features the re-added voice lines that were unused in the original game for some reason.

Besides these additions, L4D2 enthusiasts can look forward to new animations, Counter-Strike: Source weapons, PvP enhancements and fixes, Versus Survival on the main menu, common infected models from L4D1, new mutations in Rocketdude and Tank Run, UI improvements and bug and exploit fixes.

It is worth noting that L4D2 is one of the highest-rated games of all time on Steam, standing at enviable 97 per cent positive reviews.
