It's no wonder that Riot Games have a love/ hate relationship with the League of Legends top lane. After all, the items they tend to give these champions can get quite overpowered, while they also nerf the lane into the ground every so often.
While we have no doubt that the lane will eventually get nerfed, or we hope against all hope that it happens, what is it that is making the top lane so powerful?
The answer currently lies in a singular item called Heartsteel, which makes it so that no other tank item is necessary to make a top laner unkillable.
- Gold Cost: 3200
- Health: 800
- Health Regen: 200%
- Ability Haste: 20
- Build Path: Kindlegem + Crystalline Bracer + Giant’s Belt
- Passive – Colossal Consumption: Charge up a powerful attack against a champion over 3 seconds while within 700 range of them. The charged attack deals 125+6% of your max health as bonus physical damage, and grants you 10% of that amount as permanent max health. 30 second cooldown per target.
- Mythic Passive: Grants all other Legendary items 1% bonus health and 6% champion size
As we can see, the power of Heartsteel comes from its passive, which not only deals damage based on our maximum health, but also uses said damage to stack that maximum health for you.
This makes it so that during the late game, any tank becomes near unkillable, while also capable of one-shotting any squishy they get their hands on.
