Riot Games is teasing some large changes to Swain in League of Legends, calling the update a mini-rework. It's been a while since the last champion rework was made by Riot.
The most recent was Corki's update in Patch 14.10, where he became an AD character. Since then, big changes have been made to League, but none of the champions have gotten a serious rework.
Even then, there's always something being tested or changed behind the scenes by Riot. It looks like Swain is next up for big changes. Here's everything that we know so far.
Upcoming Swain Update
As much as Riot hasn't fully revealed the new Swain changes, they gave a rough idea of what changes are being planned. This appears more to focus on enhancing his playing style and making him more reliable.
Keeping this in mind, some of the upcoming changes include:
- Reducing item dependency during his ultimate
- Increasing the reliability of his abilities for both laning and support roles, with buffs to Q for solo lanes and E for supports
- Improving his ultimate to deliver more impactful damage in shorter skirmishes
The ultimate goal here is to make Swain a more dependable champion. Historically, he's been extremely item-dependent for sustain in fights and kit-dependent on longer team fights; this puts him in a niche area of use. Riot wants to throttle these dependencies down and rework values to be more reliable in solo and support.
The whole rework process does look fairly promising for such a champion who is struggling to hold his ground in top-level play. One overadjustment can always occur, as happened with Aurelion Sol's CGU.
It took many patches afterwards to get it balanced out, and Riot still hasn't quite found the perfect balance for Aurelion. These are the risks associated with such a rework.
Hopefully, it will only take Riot a bit more tuning on the details and putting Swain in a position where he is strong enough but requires very minor tweaks in order to be balanced.
