While calling them fighters would be more appropriate for this fighting league game, they've always been champions in our hearts, and that is what they are going to stay as.
Only recently they have stated that some news is coming soon, and even before the EVO 2022, they've started their dev talks, describing the development process.
In this case, they have given us insights into what the League of Legends champions will look like in the game, and whether we can expect them to be a cookie-cutter copy of what they can do in League of Legends, or take on more depth with the fighting game that is Project L.
"We want to make sure we’ve identified champions who can both improve our gameplay and be enhanced by being in our game. In short, we want to elevate their fantasy. The juggernauts should be beefier, the assassins more agile, and the mages more powerful. But beyond that, they should still feel true to who they are. We still want players who know and love these characters to see what they expect, and to give them a little more", is what the developers had to say on the matter.
Their prime example is Illaoi, and her own development process. While she is the high priest of Nagakabourous, she is, first and foremost, a beefy juggernaut who is getting supported by her god, and not puppeted by it.
As such, her fighting style will have her use tentacles to make openings, so she can be, as the devs describe it, "bonking people with a totem".
