Riot Games is adding a Gacha system to League of Legends called "The Sanctum," created parallel with the recently brought Exalted Skins.
Gacha systems, while used for many years in mobile games, have now become common in many PC and console titles too. Popular free-to-play games such as Genshin Impact and Zenless Zone Zero operate under similar mechanics.
League of Legends' Gacha system first launched in 2023 with Dark Cosmic Erasure Jhin. Community outcry aside, Riot found it lucrative enough to try again, this time with a system named The Sanctum, launching later this year.
Sanctum works just like other Gacha systems: Riot introduces a new currency called Ancient Sparks. These are available to buy within the in-game store for 400 RP and can pull rewards from a designated loot table using this currency.
It follows the logic of rarity: items are in the lowest supply and have the lowest chance of getting pulled. Rewards are split into three loot tiers: S, A, and B tiers.
S-tier items are the rarest, further having the lowest base drop rate of 0.5%. However, because an S-tier reward is guaranteed within 80 pulls, the effective drop rate increases to 1.5%. Most Valuable Reward is Exalted Skins Arcane Fractured Jinx.
A rewards like skins and other exclusives have a higher base drop rate of 10% and every 10 pulls guarantee. B-tier items are the most common and include Mythic Essence and other accessories, coming in at an 89.5% drop rate.
Players don't get any duplicates, and once all S and A tiers are attained, extra pulls grant Mythic Essence. Patch 14.24 launches on December 11, 2024, and accompanying that will be The Sanctum.
