Destiny fans' convention that turned into a charity marathon over the years has reached a new milestone as it raised $3.7 million for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. This happened in large part thanks to DrLupo's record breaking.
GuardianCon 2019 turned out to be rather eventful as the event managed to raise $3.7 million for charity which is $1 million more than in it did in 2018.
It looked like nothing crazy would happen initially but then Bungie rolled in with a goal of raising $150,000 during their four-hour stream. They just so happened to beat that goal by quite a bit as they managed to pull through donations by the end of the stream.
When we covered the company's success in raising funds, the event was still around $500,000 short of the $3 million goal. Streams after Bungie's kept bringing in money and then DrLupo happened.
His live stream was what everyone looked forward to as a means of reaching the $3 million goal but it eventually overshot it by a huge margin.
DrLupo streamed for four and a half hours and had some donation incentives of his own. While Bungie offered Destiny 2 bonuses, the streamer wasn't at liberty to offer something like that so he opted for handicaps in Fortnite. The madman actually played it without building anything as a means of raising more funds for charity.
His efforts turned out to be extremely successful since there was almost $1 million in donations at the end of his stream. The exact number was which meant he shattered all the existing GuardianCon records, including the one set by Bungie mere days prior to his stream.
Lupo's streaming block was originally meant to be four hours just like Bungie's but he extended it into overtime in an attempt to reach $1 million in donations. Unfortunately, the attempts fell just short but $920,000 is still an extremely impressive feat.
