Apex Legends could make slow effects stronger the faster you move
Respawn Entertainment is testing a scaling slow system in Apex Legends where slow effects would be stronger against players moving at faster speeds

Key Points from the Article

  • The change aims to specifically counter highly mobile Legends and players using mobility abilities, rather than penalizing all players equally
  • Players moving at normal walking or running speeds would experience weaker slow effects compared to those using speed-boosting abilities
  • This system has not been confirmed and may not be implemented, as Respawn is only experimenting with the concept
  • The goal is to balance mobility mechanics without removing movement as a core gameplay element or unfairly punishing average-speed players
Respawn Entertainment is testing a scaling slow system in Apex Legends where slow effects would be stronger against players moving at faster speeds

Respawn is reportedly testing a system in Apex Legends where slow effects become stronger against players moving at higher speeds, potentially creating a more targeted counter to mobile Legends.

Respawn Entertainment might be looking into changing how movement slows work in Apex Legends. Ideas floating around include scaling slow effects so that they’re stronger against players moving at faster speeds. The concept would give slowing abilities a more focused purpose: punishing Legends and players who are capable of moving faster than normal.

Apex Legends insider HYPERMYST said Respawn is testing a system where slows would deal more damage based on how fast you’re currently moving. Players traveling at maximum speed would be hit with a larger slow than players moving normally, HYPERMYST reported.

This concept has not been confirmed for Apex Legends. It’s possible that Respawn will ultimately decide against using a system like this. However, scaling slows based on player speed would address some of the developer’s prior comments on the matter. During discussions about movement changes, Respawn said it wanted slows to more effectively punish the game’s most mobile Legends.

Potential Movement-Based Slow Scaling

Instead of dealing the same amount of slowdown to every affected player, slow effects would deal more damage to players moving at faster speeds. As a result, players who are simply walking or running would be subject to a weaker slow. Players utilizing mobility abilities would take bigger hits from slowing attacks.

This change would ideally make slows feel like more effective counters to players who are abusing mobility without impacting every player’s movement.

Take a Legend who is moving unusually quickly for example. They could be affected by a larger slow than another player who is traveling at a normal speed.

That said, this is only a concept that Respawn is reportedly experimenting with. There’s no telling if or when this system will arrive in-game.

The developer has said that it feels as though some slows affect too wide a range of Legends. Ideally, players would use slows to punish mobile Legends instead of dragging down everyone’s movement speed. However, adjusting individual abilities can be difficult without handing all players in Apex Legends a hefty movement penalty.

Scaling slow effects based on player speed would neatly solve this issue. Players traveling at normal speeds wouldn’t take as huge of a performance loss from attacks. But highly mobile Legends who are capable of reaching faster speeds would have their movement punished more heavily by opposing teams.

Players have always moved quickly in-game, and Respawn has said that it wants to keep movement as a core part of the game. Because of this, any movement-based changes need to walk a fine line. Weakening mobility too much would hurt the game, but allowing the fastest Legends to roam free won’t feel very fun either.

Players moving at normal speeds likely won’t see a dramatic change should this bonus eventually arrives. Players currently struggling with some of the game’s fastest Legends might enjoy this quality-of-life change, should it arrive.
