id Software has revealed Revelations, a campaign expansion for Doom: The Dark Ages that adds a new chapter, fresh demons and the deadly Chain Spear, launching 7 July.

Doom: The Dark Ages is getting a meaty new campaign expansion. Titled Revelations, the DLC arrives on 7 July, picking up the Slayer's saga with a new chapter, new levels and a new weapon to tear through Hell with.

The setup leans darker and more personal than the base game. Wounded and betrayed, the Slayer is thrust into a merciless purgatory, and the only way out is to confront some haunting truths and build new strength with the help of a mysterious ally. The goal: ascend from the prison of his own mind and take down an abomination of the gods to free his followers.

On the content side, Revelations brings new levels with deeper puzzles, new demons and new mysteries to pick apart. The headline addition is the Chain Spear, a new weapon that adds another dimension to combat, rewarding mastery with a mix of power and mobility. The Dark Ages' combat was one of its stronger elements, so a new tool built around skill expression is a sensible thing to hang an expansion on.

Ripatorium 3.0 lands free for everyone

Alongside the paid expansion, the Ripatorium 3.0 update arrives the same day, free for all Dark Ages players. It expands the game's customisable arena challenge mode with deeper customisation, improved pass code generation and personal preset options.

Revelations owners get a bit extra here too: three additional maps, more demons, and fully upgraded weapons to use in the Ripatorium once they've finished the story. It's a reasonable way to keep the arena mode fresh for the people most invested in it.

Pricing and how to get it

There are a few routes in. If you own the Premium Edition or the Collectors Bundle, you get Revelations at no extra cost at launch. Base game players can buy the standalone add-on for $19.99 on 7 July, or upgrade to the Premium Edition, which is available now for $34.99.
