Doom: The Dark Ages gets upgraded PSSR support on PS5 Pro this July
Doom: The Dark Ages Update 4 launches July 7 with enhanced PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR 2.0) support for PS5 Pro

Key Points from the Article

  • PSSR 2.0 uses machine learning to upscale games with sharper, more stable images by tracking motion data, depth information, and exposure
  • Improvements enhance readability during fast-paced action, making textures, enemies, and distant details appear crisper and more consistent
  • Image clarity and stability are prioritized over detail enhancement, helping players better track movement and plan attacks during large battles

Doom: The Dark Ages is receiving upgraded PSSR support on PS5 Pro with Update 4 on July 7, delivering sharper visuals and improved image stability.

id Software has announced that Doom: The Dark Ages players will benefit from enhanced PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution support on PS5 Pro systems starting with Update 4 next week. Update 4 goes live on PS5 and PS5 Pro systems on 7 July alongside the next Doom: The Dark Ages expansion, Revelations.

Sony’s updated version of PSSR first launched on PS5 Pro systems earlier this year and allows Doom: The Dark Ages players to benefit from the best image quality possible on the console right now.

Thanks to a reconstruction algorithm based in machine learning, PSSR 2.0 upscales games to a sharper and more stable output by tracking motion data, depth information, exposure, and sub-pixel sampling.

While Doom: The Dark Ages may not rely on graphical fidelity as much as other triple-A games, readability is key. Players will naturally be dashing around maps while parrying attacks, swinging the Shield Saw, blowing enemies up, and generating clouds of particles around the screen. With so much movement going on at once, PSSR helps to keep Doom looking its best.

Textures like snow, chains swinging around the screen, weapons, sparks, jagged rockwork, and enemies all pop more consistently while in motion thanks to the update.

Id Software said this next patch will support “cleaner PSSR reconstruction”, allowing for a significantly clearer image than was previously possible. Thin objects that overlap will create less visual noise, which comes in handy considering how chaotic Doom can get.

Specifically built around the idTech8 engine, Doom: The Dark Ages was designed to push frantic gameplay while being scalable across a variety of hardware. Dynamic resolution, realistic lighting, expansive battlefields, and smooth responses to player input help make Doom: The Dark Ages what it is, with PSSR2 helping to boost visuals on PS5 Pro systems.

Players will also see improvements during large fights, where enemy outlines stand out against the screen more clearly. Details in the distance are crisper, which helps players position themselves or plan their next attack.

Details may not pop out as much as players would hope on PS5 Pro with PSSR2 enabled, but improvements to image clarity and stability are the focus here.
