Doom: Dark Ages will be the new game in Doom's universe—it has been confirmed tonight on Xbox Showcase. After many speculations about the game's setting, we are now completely sure that the game will take place during the mediaeval age, as the trailer itself shows.
The Doom hero, before he became the hero we know now, throughout a plethora of Doom installments, was a weapon of gods, as the writings at the beginning of the trailer suggest. Despite the setting, the gameplay stays pretty much the same, with very fast shootouts and enemies designed in classic Doom style.
Apart from the classic Doom weapons, we can see some more old-style ones like swords and maces, and even the enemies are wielding such weapons as well. Of course, the unique epic heavy metal music is here as well, and everything feels like a good old Doom experience.
Despite being a game developed by one of the Microsoft-owned studios, ID Software, the game is confirmed to be released on PlayStation 5 as well, apart from Xbox Series X|S and PC. Those rumours were circulating earlier, but now, with this trailer, they have been confirmed.
Regarding the release date, all we know is that Doom: Dark Ages will come somewhere during 2025 without a specific date, but considering the entire trailer is made from in-game footage, it suggests that the game is already in the later phases of development, so it will probably be sooner than later, but only time will tell.
